A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck western Mexico early Thursday morning, killing at least two and powering hundreds of thousands.

The earthquake is the second to hit Mexico’s Michoacán state in three days. On Monday, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the state, killing two people in the town of Manzanillo and prompting a tsunami warning for the area.

The epicenter of Thursday’s earthquake was further inland, near the town of Aguililla.

Landslides were reported in the region, and damage to buildings and highways was reported in Uruapan.

More than 300 miles from Mexico City, two people died in the earthquake.

One woman fell down the stairs at her home in the city’s Doctors neighborhood immediately after the buildings began to shake.

Another man who lives in the study area suffered a serious heart attack, Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed.

“The government of Mexico City supports the families and extends our solidarity,” Sheinbaum said.

About 312,533 customers lost power in Mexico City immediately after the earthquake, according to the Federal Electricity Commission.

Pictures from the city show people flocking to the dark streets early this morning as workers work to repair damaged power lines.

Power was restored to Mexico City at 9:30 a.m., Mayor Sheinbaum said Twitter.

Monday’s earthquake marks the 37th anniversary of one of the deadliest in Mexico’s history. A 1985 magnitude 8.0 earthquake off the coast of Michoacán killed nearly 9,500 people.

Mexico holds earthquake drills every year on the anniversary of the September 19 earthquake. The 2022 earthquake is the second since 1985 to hit on the same date. Another 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit Puebla and Mexico City in 2017, killing 370 people.
